Time and time again, we hear the question: “Can I install my roof on my own?” And the answer is quite simple; of course you CAN install your own roof, but you should really leave your roof to the professionals.
Benefits of a Professional Roofer
- Roofing Experience: A roofing contractor can pinpoint the exact cause of your leak. You probably cannot. In fact, did you know that not all leaks that appear to be roof leaks are actually are roof leaks? So instead of giving up a few of your pressure weekends replacing your roof only to find that the problem lies elsewhere, leave the roofing to the roofing experts.
- Speed: Replacing your roof often involves removing the old roof, exposing your home to inclement weather. This is why roofing contractors have specialized crews of eight to ten men who can remove and install a new roof in a single day.
- Labor: The average roof if 1800 square feet. A bundle of low end shingles weighs about 85 lbs. So are you ready to carry seventy two 85 lb. bundles onto your roof?
- Garbage Disposal: A professional roofing contractor will deal with the removal of any and all debris, meaning you won’t have to!
- Safety: Roofers know what they are doing. You do not. So before you take a step onto your sloped roof, consider hiring a professional contractor.

Also known as a layover roof, re-roofing describes the process of installing a second layer of shingles over the first. This can be done for several reasons – whether you need a re-roofing because your shingles are damaged or if you just want to re-roof to give your home a face-lift. It doesn’t matter what the reason, Atlantic Remodeling is here for you.
Advantages of Re-Roofing
- Instant Curb Appeal: A new roof can make your home look like new.
- Save Time: You can start the layover roof without removing the old roof.
- Save Money: Tearing down your old roof can be costly.
- Avoid Mess: No demolitions means little mess.
- Reduce Maintenance Costs: Re-roofing prevents tiny roofing issues from becoming major roofing problems.
- Easier to Sell: If your roof is more than 20 years old and you are thinking of putting your home on the market soon, you may want to consider re-roofing your home.
- Increase Property Value: And who doesn’t want that!?
As you can see, there are many benefits of a layover roof. However, not all homes are candidates for this roofing service. Conditions that may prevent you from installing a layover roof include:
- 1) If you already have one layover roof: Most building codes allow for one layover roof (or maximum of two roofs) on a structure.
- 2) The roof structure (roof frame) is not strong enough: Do an inside inspection and an outside inspection to determine if your roof frame is strong enough to support a second roof. If you see signs of sagging, rotten or decaying ridgelines, hip lines or decking, remove the old roof and repair the frame before installing the new roof.
- 3) If your existing roof has any of the following problems: Peeled, curled, cupped, split or otherwise damaged shingles; moss growth; missing shingles; or your new shingles are lighter than the old shingles allowing the bumps and lines to show through the new layer.
- 4) If you live in an extremely cold climate: If the average temperature during winter months is below freezing, an overlay roof will increase the chance of Ice Dams.
